ELECTRICITY TARIFFS IN SARAWAK

TO STAY DESPITE FUEL PRICE

INCREASE

LIMBANG, June 7 (Bernama) -- Electricity tariffs in Sarawak will stay despite the increase in

fuel price since Wednesday, State Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management,

Datuk Seri Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said here today.

He said there had been no proposal yet from state-owned electricity company, Sesco Sdn Bhd, for a review of the current tariffs implemented since April last year.

"All this while, Sesco has had no subsidy (to purchase fuel for its electricity generation plant). We always procure the fuel based on the market price," he added when met after closing a three-day "Pesta Babulang," a festival organised by the Bisaya community in Batu Danau, here.

He admitted that Sesco could not depend entirely on fossil fuel to generate electricity following the unstable world price for oil, and had been actively exploring the potential of hydroelectric power in the state.

"We will continue to develop hydroelectric power in Sarawak as we have a lot of potential for it. We are also trying to develop a hybrid system (for power generation)," he said.

BISAYA'S TRADITIONAL EXPERTISE TO

REALISE PLAN TO MAKE SARAWAK A

RICE BOWL STATE

LIMBANG, June 7 (Bernama) -- The traditional expertise of the Bisayas in paddy planting and
buffalo rearing should be tapped to realise the government's plan to make Sarawak the nation's
next rice bowl state, Second Minister of Resources Planning and Management Datuk Seri Awang
Tengah Ali Hasan said here today.

He said being one of the minority ethnic groups in the state, the Bisayas had been traditionally associated with rice farming and known for their skills in breeding buffaloes to work on their farms.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of a three-day Pesta Babulang, an annual community festival for the Bisayas at Batu Danau near here, he said the community and other people in the state should be prepared to play their part to see the success of the plan to make Sarawak as a major producer of rice.

He said the federal government had also agreed to allocate a fund of RM50 million to enable the plan to take off with Limbang Division being identified as one of the sites for commercial plantation of rice.

On another note, Awang Tengah also proposed to the Sarawak Bisaya Association to turn Batu Danau, located about 30 kilometres from Limbang town, into a Bisaya Cultural Centre which would reflect the heritage of the area as the home for the community.

He said that he would be discussing further with the association office-bearers, Batu Danau state assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang, Limbang member of Parliament Hasbi Habibollah and the Land and Survey Department in details about the proposal.

He added that the Bisayas possessed a colourful cultural heritage that they should continue to preserve and having a distinguished cultural centre could further promote their identity to other races and becoming a tourism attraction.

Awang Tengah said the Bisaya culture had also contributed to the beauty of Sarawak multi-racial community who were also proud of their respective cultural backgrounds.

"I liken our state as a garden and the different cultural heritages of the people as flowers of many colours and types that contribute to this garden's beauty," he added.

BODY OF BOY FOUND IN UNUSED

MINING POOL

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 (Bernama) -- Police have identified the body of a male teenager found
in an unused mining pool near a motor workshop at Jalan Segambut near here today.

Sentul OCPD ACP Ahmad Sofian Md Yassin, when contacted, said the victim was a son of a couple who lived in the area.

He said the victim's father, who requested to be known as Chow, went to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital with his wife to identify the body and confirmed that it was that of their 13-year-old son, Chow Yik Hou, who was missing since Monday.

He said the couple had lodged a report on their son at the Kepong police station yesterday when he failed to return home after going out with friends.

"The father had thought his son was at a friend's house and decided to lodge a police report when he (son) did not come home after four days," he added.

Yik Hou's body was found by a member of the public in the mining pool at about 2pm and then sent to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital for an autopsy.

ARTISTES' DAY TO BE INCLUDED IN

TOURISM CALENDAR

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 (Bernama) -- The National Association of Artistes or (Seniman) is
working towards getting "Hari Seniman" or Artistes' Day, which falls on May 29, into the
Tourism Ministry's calendar of events, to make the day a more eventful celebration in future.

Seniman president Datuk Mustapha Maarof said the ministry had agreed in principle to this plan, but the association would wait for an official decision.

"As for the expenditure, I think we can get some funds from the Information Ministry and the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry if the Tourism Ministry does not have a budget for it."

He was speaking after attending a demonstration on dangerous stunts in films organised by the Malaysian Association of Film Workers (PPFM) at Taman Tasik Metropolitan here today.

On programmes to be carried out for future Hari Seniman celebrations, Mustapha said they would be improved.

"A committee will be responsible for planning the events next year," he added.

KEDAH GOVT MOVES TO TIDE OVER

WITH FUEL PRICE HIKE

JITRA, June 7 (Bernama) -- The state government will make adjustments to the state budget
following the hike in petrol and diesel prices, Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak said today.

Describing as "abrupt and hasty" the federal government's decision to raise fuel prices, he said the adjustments would be tabled in the next sitting of the state assembly.

The adjustments were inevitable as the sudden 40 per cent increase in petrol price and diesel by 63 per cent would push up the state's operational expenditure, said Azizan who returned yesterday from a 10-day visit to Egypt.

The federal government should have been more considerate by increasing fuel prices gradually in order not to burden the people, he told reporters after opening an art and cultural programme at Kampung Siputeh.

To tide over with the spiralling global oil price, the government raised petrol price to RM2.70 a litre and diesel to RM2.58 a litre effective Thursday.
